Question: I find it difficult to ‘see a stride’. Are there any exercises I can do at home to help me improve this?

Answer: This takes practice. While others find it comes naturally, some riders find it more difficult. If you can, create a two or three fence layout at home, or use poles on the ground if you prefer, and practice lengthening and shortening. The more you do this, the more you will be able to adjust. It is a very simple, yet effective exercise for educating both horses and riders.

Question: As soon as I get to a competition I am overcome with nerves. What advice can you give to help me at shows?

Answer: Everyone is different – luckily I have never been a nervous rider but firstly you are not alone in your situation. Many riders, especially young riders, get very anxious. It really is a case of confidence, so for a start don’t over face yourself or your horse/pony. Ask yourself exactly what it is that makes you feel nervous and address this calmly and rationally. Go to as many shows as you can and prepare at home well so that you can try to deliver your best performance. The more you do this, the better the results should be, and the more confident you will be as a rider. I have seen the most nervous riders go on to be top competitors so don’t give up!
